What is Ramadan?

With the month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community upon us once again, we thought it might be useful to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Ramadan.

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims worldwide observe a period of fasting and spiritual reflection. The exact dates of Ramadan change every year because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of March 22nd or March 23rd.

Why is the month of Ramadan significant?
Muslims believe that during Ramadan, the Islamic holy book — the Quran — was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. Hence, Ramadan is also a time for reading the Quran and increased prayer and charitable giving.

Why do Muslims fast?
For Muslims, Ramadan is a time of increased devotion to Allah and a time to reflect on one's own spiritual journey. The act of fasting is seen as a way to purify the soul, to gain self-discipline, and to become closer to Allah. Fasting duringRamadan — one of the Five Pillars of Islam — involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset.

Why is charitable giving important during Ramadan?
Charity plays a crucial role in Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to give to those in need, and engage in acts of kindness. It is believed that the act of giving helps to purify one's own soul and to gain blessings from Allah. Many Muslims choose to donate a portion of their income to charities, and some engage in volunteer work, giving their time and effort to help those in need.

One of the most common forms of charitable giving during Ramadan is Zakat, which is a mandatory donation of a portion of one's wealth to the poor and needy. In addition to Zakat, many Muslims also engage in Sadaqah, which is voluntary charity. Sadaqah can take many forms, including donating money, food, or clothing to those in need.

We work to improve the lives of those in need, specifically in the rural regions of Pakistan.
